That idea soon revealed itself. The moon’s light quickly diminished as clouds covered its valuable glow. Drops of water fell on our heads with increasing intensity. It had started to rain. We were sitting next to the flood channel and needed to move fast.

The flame in our lantern flickered erratically. A coarse gust of wind moved across my face, along with its howling sound flowing past my ears. Rain pelted us from above — faster and faster. The stream grew in size. The weather was changing quickly.

With urgency and not wanting to drown, I quickly scanned the room. In the far corner was a large circular wooden door. At its center was a large bolt that seemed to be resting in front of the door. I got up and inspected it and tried to pull the door open. It wouldn’t budge.

The stream was growing bigger. The rushing sound of water buffeted the walls and floor. Ben yelled to me, “We need to get out of here now! Water is pouring down from the ceiling and rising fast!”

I looked over and Ben and Cristina were soaked. I yelled back, “Get over here. I need your help!”

Cristina and Ben joined me immediately and we worked on our exit solution. There were two poles at its center. They acted as guiders for the bolt. I instructed them with eminent urgency, “Slide these poles away from each other!” Water started to rise above our ankles. If we didn’t complete this task in the next minute, the water pressure would hold the door closed and we would be submerged under the rising water. Trapped.

With a sudden jerk and thrust, we moved the poles in opposing directions. But as we moved them further away, resistance quickly built up. We had to muster all we had to slide the pole through, enough to clear the way for the door to be opened. We hurried as fast as we could.

Cristina yelled in desperation, “MORE! Push harder!”

The damp conditions provided unneeded friction between the poles and the guides for the bolt. With a final shove, the poles latched and locked in place. Success! We unlocked the door.

The three of us pulled the door open, enough to permit ourselves to exit. At that moment, triggered by the open passageway, a rush of wind charged from the ceiling above and flowed through our exit way, creating a relentless gale of rain and wind. The door opening had transformed itself into a conduit for a powerful ventilation tunnel. If we didn’t act quickly, we would be sucked forward and the door would slam with great force and crush us.

Amidst the growing torrent of wind and spray of water, Ben shouted, “You two go through! I’ll hold the door!”

Time was critical. Without hesitation, Cristina helped me as I limped and quickly passed through the door. The wind picked up speed, becoming fiercer. I yelled, “We’re through! Come on!”

Looking back at Ben, I noticed a shadowy figure approach him — and grab his body. It was the same shadow I had seen earlier up in the hallway.
